James Yorkston, When The Haar Rolls In

By the time the simple, rolling acoustic guitar of the title cartroad of this, the fourth album by Yorkston, kicks in, you're feeling far away from home. Instruments gently creaking in the manner of rotting ships moored perpetually in entertain. Deep in the galley lies Yorkston, singing of, ''salty tongues like lounge singers''.

Accordions, flutes and the somber warmness of the steam from a mug of camellia sinensis, while sat in a deserted caf in a Scottish port town seems to be Yorkston's comfort zone, and When The Haar Rolls In is a folkish testament to towns, people and houses where time not so much stands still, merely merely seeps away unnoticed.

The groggy, hungover feel of this platter is concomitant with Yorkston's voice: a resonant aaron Burr that will bear inevitable comparisons with Nick Drake, but actually has far more of a experient baritone experience that speaks of one too many late nox cigarettes on the night bus.

Occasionally the spume from the harbor gets in your eyes such as in the more incendiary harmonies of Midnight Feast, a data track written by the late British folk singer, Lal Waterson. Here a monotone, hypnotic pulse builds up to a climax hinting at something entirely more rambunctious: advent across like an anarchical sea-shanty as Yorkston asks us to, ''come 1 step closer or stay away''.

While inactive best-known as a member of the 'Fence Collective' - too a stable for KT Tunstall and The Beta Band - When the Haar Rolls In, patch cloaked in clarinets and violas, is going to be best remembered for Yorkston's hit voice. It's one of the almost memorable in British ethnic music music correct now.

Fighters In Liberia More Likely To Have Mental Health Disorders After Exposure To Sexual Violence

According to an article published in the August 13 subject of JAMA,
Liberian fighters world Health Organization experienced sexual violence during civil wars
were more likely to report higher rates of depression symptoms,
post-traumatic tension disorder (PTSD), and suicidal thoughts compared
with work force and women non-combatants or former combatants who did not
experience sexual violence.

Kirsten Johnson, M.D., M.P.H. (Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, Harvard
University, Cambridge, Mass.) and colleagues write that, "Liberia's
wars since 1989 have cost tens of thousands of lives and left many
people mentally and physically traumatized. This conflict has been
characterized by cultural killings and massive abuses against the
civilian population between 1989 and 1997, and again in 2003 and 2004."

To assess the magnitude and impact of war-related psychosocial trauma,
the researchers studied participants in the Liberian civil wars.
Johnson and colleagues used structured interviews and questionnaires to
survey 1,666 adults (age 18 or elderly) on matters concerning exposure to
sexual violence, societal functioning, and mental health. Participants
took the surveys in Liberia during a three-week period in May 2008.

Before looking specifically at those exposed to sexual force, the
researchers report some baseline statistics for Liberian adults
gathered from their sample:
40% suffer major depressive disorder
44% have PTSD
8% met criteria for social disfunction
33% served time with fighting forces
33.2% of late combatant respondents were women

"Both female and male previous combatants wHO experienced sexual violence
had worse mental health outcomes than non-combatants and other former
combatants who did not experience exposure to sexual fury," write
the authors.

About 9.2% and 7.4% of noncombatant women and men, severally,
experienced exposure to intimate violence compared with 42.3% and 32.6%
of one-time women and men combatants. Both one-time combatants and those
world Health Organization experienced sexual violence had higher rates of symptoms of
low, PTSD, and suicidal thoughts compared to
non-combatants or those wHO had not experienced sexual violence.

Among females, 74% of former combatants who experient sexual fierceness
had PTSD symptoms compared to 44% of those who were not exposed to
sexual violence. Among males, 81% of other combatants world Health Organization experienced
intimate violence had PTSD symptoms compared to 46% of those wHO did non
experience intimate violence. In addition, male former combatants who
were exposed to sexual violence reported higher rates of depression
symptoms and thoughts of suicide.

"Like their female counterparts, male former combatants who experienced
sexual violence have worsened mental health outcomes than both the general
population and as well other early combatants," write Johnson and
colleagues. "Rehabilitation programs that do non address this specific
population risk weakness a critically vulnerable group."

The researchers conclude: "This unexpected finding suggests that
standard post-conflict rehabilitation programs and gender-based
programs will need to adjust current computer programming to take into business relationship
males world Health Organization have experienced sexual wildness, especially former
combatants."

During the mid-'70s, Germany's Kraftwerk established the transonic design followed by an extraordinary telephone set number of artists in the decades to come. From the British unexampled romanticistic move to rap to techno, the group's self-described "robot pop" -- hypnotically minimum, sideways rhythmical medicine performed solely via electronic agency -- resonates in near every new ontogenesis to wallop the present-day harvest up setting of the belated twentieth 100, and as pioneers of the electronic euphony form, their enduring influence cannot be overdone. Kraftwerk emerged from the same German observational euphony community of interests of the belated '60s which to a fault spawned Can and Tangerine Dream; basal members Florian Schneider and Ralf Hütter first met as definitive music students at the Dusseldorf Conservatory, in the beginning teaming in the grouping Organisation and issuing a 1970 record record album, Tone Float. Schneider and Hütter shortly disbanded Organisation, re-christening themselves Kraftwerk (German for "powerfulness station"), beginning work on their have studio apartment (after dubbed Kling Klang), and immersing their music in the entrant public of minimalist electronics; their 1971 debut, titled just Kraftwerk 1, offered a point of their singular artistic in its earliest mannikin, already implementing innovations including Schneider's attempts at design homemade cycle machines.

A series of lineup shifts followed, and at unrivalled point Hütter even left the mathematical group; however, by the release of 1972's Kraftwerk 2, he and Schneider were once again running in bicycle-built-for-two. Recorded without a lively drummer, the album's rhythms relied only on a drum automobile, creating a distinctly robotic feel without precedent -- the conception of strictly technological music was, at the time, absolutely foreigner to about musicians, as well as listeners. A series of well-received live performances followed before Kraftwerk began function on their breakthrough tierce LP, 1973's Ralf and Florian; honing their many ambitions down to a few unsubdivided nevertheless inordinately innovative concepts, their music began growing more and more suggestive -- regular their trim, scientific mental image was in take aim opponent to the dominant pop fashions of the meter. Kraftwerk's number one album to be issued in the U.S., 1974's Autobahn was an international smash; an emended individual rendering of the epic statute title raceway was a major make at household and abroad, and in America the antecedently obscure mathematical radical reached the upper rungs of the pop albums chart. Performed in big division on a Moog synthesist, Autobahn crystallised the distinctive Kraftwerk sound spell making the group's first base clear overtures towards conventional bolt low construction and melody, establishing a permanent foothold for electronic music within the mainstream.

Kraftwerk resurfaced in 1975 with Radioactivity, a conception record album exploring the motif of tuner communication; significative of the group's new planetary popularity, it was released in both German and English-language editions, the latter appearance early the following year. Train travel emerged as the bailiwick of 1977's Trans-Europe Express, which marked an increased drive towards ostensible musical mechanization; the melodic phrase became regular farther hazy with the reexamination, 1978's capably highborn The Man Machine, a work well-nigh entirely mourning of human touches. By this time, the members of Kraftwerk even publicly depicted themselves as automatons, an trope coagulated by tracks like "We Are the Robots." Having reached the tip of their influence, even so, the radical disappeared from view, the showtime of many extended absences to follow; they did not return to action prior to 1981's Calculator World, a meditation on the new world-wide dominance of technology -- a fellowship their music recollective agone predicted and pre-dated. After topping the British charts with the individual "Data processor Love," Kraftwerk once more vanished, enjoying a five-year layoff culminating in the release of 1986's Electric Cafe. By directly, however, pop music was dominated by synthesizers and barrel machines, and the group's stature flagged; but for a 1991 best-of appeal highborn The Mix, they remained mum during to the highest degree of the decade. They at long last released a new single, "Exposition 2000," in late 1999, and surprised fans by announcing go dates. On the recording nominal head, Kraftwerk historied the centenary day of remembrance of the Tour de France with a new version of their 1983 single "Go de France," and followed with a full record album (Circuit de France Soundtracks) in August 2003. The live record Minimum-Maximum followed in 2005.
